{"id":5558,"date":"2024-05-15T09:27:38","date_gmt":"2024-05-15T06:27:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.webcozumleri.com\/?p=5558"},"modified":"2025-03-27T18:04:45","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T15:04:45","slug":"bilberry-eng","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.webcozumleri.com\/en\/bilberry-eng\/","title":{"rendered":"Bilberry"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><strong>Bilberries are linked to various health benefits, from improved vision to lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bilberries (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccinium myrtillus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) are small, blue berries native to Northern Europe. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re often referred to as European blueberries, as they\u2019re very similar in appearance to North American blueberries (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK92770\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bilberries have purportedly been used for medicinal purposes since the Middle Ages, while their juice was traditionally used to dye linen and paper (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/220005144\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> Rich in Nutrients<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like most berries, bilberries are a nutrient-rich fruit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a nutritional profile resembling that of\u00a0blueberries, they are commonly known as European blueberries, as they belong to the same plant family as this popular fruit (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26868586\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accordingly, bilberries can be expected to offer around 85 calories, 15 grams of naturally-occurring sugar, and 4 grams of fiber per cup (148 grams). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly to blueberries, they likely contain around 85% water, as well as good amounts of manganese and vitamins C and K (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/fdc-app.html#\/food-details\/171711\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> Pack Beneficial Plant Compounds<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bilberries are rich in antioxidants, which are beneficial plant compounds that help protect your body against damage and disease.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows that berries, including blueberries, are among the foods with the highest antioxidant levels. Due to their close relationship to blueberries, bilberries likely share the same properties (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31269727\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28609132\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bilberries contain vitamin C and phenolic acids and are an especially good source of anthocyanins, the powerful flavonoid antioxidant that gives red, purple, and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blue fruits<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and vegetables their characteristic color (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK92770\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span><\/a><span Improve Vision<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bilberries are most popular for their purported ability to improve vision, particularly night vision.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few small studies have researched these berries\u2019 effects on night vision but concluded that this benefit is not supported by strong evidence (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35847049\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, bilberries may benefit your vision in other ways. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other studies suggest that supplementing with 160\u2013480 mg of powdered bilberry extract daily may reduce eye dryness and other symptoms of eye fatigue caused by working with video display terminals (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28617532\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/321146481\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25923485\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> May Reduce Inflammation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bilberries may help\u00a0fight inflammation, which is believed to be the root cause of many diseases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This effect may partly be due to their content of anthocyanins, which are antioxidants with anti-inflammatory properties (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK92770\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data from studies show that bilberry reduces levels of inflammatory markers in most clinical studies of metabolic disorders and may be useful for the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory disorders (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36286028\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study including 24 participants showed preliminary improvements in signs and symptoms of severe dry eyes after taking dietary supplementation of bilberry extract and fish oil for 3 months (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36742436\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, more research is needed to confirm these effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> May Lower Blood Sugar Levels<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bilberry extract appears effective in lowering HbA1c and total and LDL cholesterol (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34067538\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthocyanins in bilberries are mainly associated with oxidative stress inhibition and gut microbiota modulation (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30595029\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthocyanins are powerful antioxidants and play an important role in the prevention of metabolic disease and type 2 diabetes (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32260262\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An 8-week study showed that a diet enriched with fresh bilberries increased insulin secretion in adults with metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions that increases your risk of type 2 diabetes, stroke, and heart disease (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28556578\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight:
