Its scientific names are\u00a0<i>Actaea racemosa<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Cimicifuga racemosa<\/i>, and it\u2019s sometimes called black bugbane, black snakeroot, baneberry, or fairy candle (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29261886\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1<\/a>).<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The popular women\u2019s health supplement Remifemin contains black cohosh as an active ingredient.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its flowers and roots were commonly used in traditional Native American medicine, and today it\u2019s a popular women\u2019s health supplement claimed to help with menopause symptoms, fertility, and hormonal balance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may be effective because it functions as a phytoestrogen, a plant-based compound that mimics the action of the hormone estrogen. However, there\u2019s some debate as to whether black cohosh can be classified as a true phytoestrogen (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22504147\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23459142\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless, black cohosh appears to be beneficial for relieving menopause symptoms. Still, evidence for its other uses is lacking.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Benefits and Uses<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black cohosh has a number of potential benefits \u2014 most of them related to women\u2019s health or\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hormonal balance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Yet, with the exception of menopause symptoms, there is little evidence to support its use for any of these conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Menopause and Menopause Symptoms<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alleviating menopause symptoms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the reason most people use black cohosh, and it\u2019s one of the uses that has the most compelling evidence to support it. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one study in 80 menopausal women who were experiencing hot flashes, those who supplemented with 20 mg of black cohosh daily for 8 weeks reported significantly fewer and less severe hot flashes than before they started the supplement (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29619387\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s more, other human studies have confirmed similar findings. Though larger studies are needed, black cohosh appears to be beneficial for alleviating menopause symptoms (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/31734757\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Fertility<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although you may see many claims online that black cohosh can improve fertility or\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">help you get pregnant<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there\u2019s not a great deal of evidence to support this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, research indicates that black cohosh may improve the effectiveness of the fertility drug Clomid (clomiphene citrate) in people who are infertile, increasing their chances of becoming pregnant (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19909590\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6,<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18413068\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7,<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24592984\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three small human studies show an improvement in pregnancy rates or ovulation in women with infertility who took black cohosh supplements along with Clomid (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19909590\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18413068\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24592984\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, these studies were small, and more research is needed to confirm this effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Women\u2019s Health<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black cohosh is also used for a number of other purposes related to women\u2019s health. However, the evidence supporting these benefits is not as strong as the evidence supporting its benefits for menopause and fertility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a few more reasons women may use black cohosh to support hormonal balance:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supplementing with black cohosh may increase a woman with PCOS\u2019s chances of getting pregnant on Clomid. Supplementing with black cohosh may also help regulate your cycles if you have\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PCOS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24592984\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8,<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23347605\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fibroids.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0One 3-month study in 244 postmenopausal women found that supplementing daily with 40 mg of black cohosh may decrease the size of uterine fibroids by up to 30% (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24719645\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Though there are some claims online that black cohosh can help with PMS or PMDD, there\u2019s no substantial evidence to support this.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Menstrual cycle regulation.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0In women with or without PCOS who are receiving fertility treatments like Clomid, black cohosh may help regulate their menstrual cycle (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19909590\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18413068\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a07<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24592984\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b><br \/>\nCancer<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black cohosh has some potentially estrogenic activity, meaning it behaves like the hormone estrogen, which may worsen breast cancer or increase your breast cancer risk (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23439657\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, most studies show that black cohosh does not affect your\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breast cancer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0risk. In two human studies, taking black cohosh was associated with a decreased risk of breast cancer (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23439657\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In test-tube studies, black cohosh extract exhibited anti-estrogen activity and helped slow the spread of breast cancer cells (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29734650\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, more research needs to be done to understand the link between breast cancer and black cohosh.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Mental Health<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black cohosh may have some beneficial effects on\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">particularly in menopausal women.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One review of studies investigated the use of herbal supplements for anxiety and depression in menopausal women. Researchers found that supplementing with black cohosh had no effect on anxiety, but it was linked to significant improvements in psychological symptoms (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/31630610\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, more research is needed before the effect of black cohosh on mental health is fully understood.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Sleep<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although there\u2019s little evidence that black cohosh can\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improve sleep<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it may help reduce symptoms that are causing sleep disturbances in menopausal women, such as hot flashes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, one small study in 42 menopausal women found that supplementing with black cohosh seemed to improve sleep duration and quality (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26000551\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study noted that a combination of black cohosh and other compounds \u2014 including chasteberry, zinc, ginger, and hyaluronic acid \u2014 helped improve hot flashes that were associated with insomnia and anxiety (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26788874\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, it\u2019s hard to say whether black cohosh or one of the other ingredients was the beneficial compound in this mixture.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Weight Loss<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Menopausal women may be at an increased risk of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unwanted weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as their estrogen levels naturally decrease (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/31367198\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Theoretically, because black cohosh may exhibit estrogenic effects, it may have a small beneficial effect on weight management in menopausal women (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/31367198\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Black cohosh is a flowering plant that\u2019s native to North America.
