Here are 9 of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> Very Nutritious<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chlorella\u2019s impressive nutritional profile has led some to call it a \u201csuper food.\u201d While its exact nutrient content depends on growing conditions, the species used and how supplements are processed, it\u2019s clear it packs several beneficial nutrients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Protein:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Chlorella is 50\u201360%\u00a0protein. However, most supplements don\u2019t provide even 1 gram of fiber per dose (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26561078\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1747-0080.2011.01569.x\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b> Binds to Heavy Metals, Aiding Detox<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chlorella has gotten some buzz for its ability to help the body \u201cdetox.\u201d In fact, animal studies indicate that it\u2019s effective at helping remove heavy metals and other harmful compounds from the body (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3654245\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12781705\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21297350\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heavy metals include some elements that are essential in small amounts, such as iron and copper, but these and other heavy metals like cadmium and lead can be toxic in larger amounts. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s rare for people to have dangerous levels of heavy metals in their system, people can get exposed to heavy metals through pollution or certain jobs such as mining (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3168898\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In animals, algae, including chlorella, has been found to weaken the heavy metal toxicity of the liver, brain and kidneys (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4303853\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, chlorella has been shown to help lower the amount of other harmful chemicals that are sometimes found in food. One of these is dioxin, a hormone disruptor that can contaminate animals in the food supply (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17472477\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/mediacentre\/factsheets\/fs225\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on this evidence, it seems that chlorella could help enhance your body\u2019s natural ability to clear toxins.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> Could Enhance Your Immune System<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your immune system helps keep you healthy by fighting off infections.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a complex system made up of multiple mechanisms and cells that get into gear when an invader enters your body.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chlorella has been found to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enhance the immune response<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in both animal and human studies, although the evidence so far is limited.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one small study, men produced more antibodies when taking chlorella than when they took a placebo. Antibodies help fight foreign invaders in your body, meaning this finding is quite promising (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21906314\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In another small, eight-week study, healthy adults who took chlorella showed markers of increased immune activity (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22849818\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevertheless, findings have been mixed, with some studies showing little to no effect. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, one study found that chlorella supplements enhanced immune function in participants aged 50\u201355, but not those over 55 (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12874157\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So it\u2019s possible that chlorella may have immune-boosting effects in some populations and age groups, but not in all.
