Many of these benefits come from its main active ingredient, curcumin. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read on to learn what the science says about turmeric and curcumin as well as their benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are Turmeric and Curcumin?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turmeric is the spice that gives curry its yellow color. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has been used in India for thousands of years as both a spice and medicinal herb. Recently, science has started to back up traditional claims that turmeric contains compounds with medicinal properties (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3633300\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These compounds are called curcuminoids. The most important one is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">curcumin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> Turmeric Contains Bioactive Compounds with Medicinal Properties<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the curcumin content of turmeric isn\u2019t that high. It\u2019s around 3%, by weight (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17044766\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Most of the studies on this herb use turmeric extracts that contain mostly curcumin itself, with dosages usually exceeding 1 gram per day. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It would be very difficult to reach these levels just using turmeric as a spice in your foods. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why some people choose to use supplements. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, curcumin is poorly absorbed into your bloodstream. In order to experience the full effects of curcumin, its bioavailability (the rate at which your body absorbs a substance) needs to improve (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26007179\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It helps to consume it with\u00a0black pepper, which contains piperine. Piperine is a natural substance that enhances the absorption of curcumin by 2,000% (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9619120\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, the best curcumin supplements contain piperine, and this makes them substantially more effective. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curcumin is also fat soluble, which means it breaks down and dissolves in fat or oil. That\u2019s why it may be a good idea to take curcumin supplements with a meal that\u2019s high in fat.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> Curcumin is a Natural Anti-inflammatory Compound<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflammation is incredibly important. It helps fight foreign invaders and has a role in repairing damage in your body. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although acute, short-term inflammation is beneficial, it can be a concern if it becomes chronic and attacks your body\u2019s own tissues. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists now believe that chronic low-level inflammation can play a role in some health conditions and diseases. However, very high doses are required to produce medicinal results (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26007179\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8,\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29097552\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33041781\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Increases the Antioxidant Capacity of the Body<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxidative damage is believed to be one of the mechanisms behind aging and many diseases. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It involves free radicals, highly reactive molecules with unpaired electrons. Free radicals tend to react with important organic substances, such as fatty acids, proteins, or DNA.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main reason antioxidants are so beneficial is that they protect your body from free radicals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curcumin is a potent antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals due to its chemical structure (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17569207\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, animal and cellular studies suggest that curcumin may block the action of free radicals and may stimulate the action of other antioxidants. Further clinical studies are needed in humans to confirm these benefits (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33041781\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Can Boost Brain-derived Neurotrophic Factor<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before scientists had a better understanding of neurons, it was believed that they weren\u2019t able to divide and multiply after early childhood. However, they now know that isn\u2019t the case. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neurons are capable of forming new connections, and in certain areas of the brain they can multiply and increase in number.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the main drivers of this process is brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). This is a gene that\u2019s involved in making a protein responsible for promoting the life of neurons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The BDNF protein plays a role in memory and learning, and it can be found in areas of the brain responsible for eating, drinking, and body weight (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/genetics\/gene\/bdnf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fncel.2019.00363\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many common brain disorders have been linked to decreased levels of BDNF protein, including depression and Alzheimer\u2019s disease (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-020-73576-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6358753\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, animal studies have found that curcumin may increase brain levels of BDNF (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/mi\/2017\/6280925\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0166432812006997\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By doing this, it may be effective in delaying or even reversing many brain diseases and age-related decreases in brain function. Still, since these studies were performed in animals, it\u2019s hard to say what the results mean for humans (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3281036\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">19,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/british-journal-of-nutrition\/article\/examining-the-potential-clinical-value-of-curcumin-in-the-prevention-and-diagnosis-of-alzheimers-disease\/A2DB953BAA57C30E080D030AF0C225D9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may also help\u00a0improve memory\u00a0and attention, which seems logical given its effects on BDNF levels. However, more studies are needed to confirm this (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1064748117305110?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> Curcumin May Lower Your Risk of Heart Disease<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the world (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/mediacentre\/factsheets\/fs310\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Researchers have studied it for many decades and learned a lot about why it happens. Unsurprisingly, heart disease is incredibly complicated and various things contribute to it. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curcumin may help reverse many steps in the heart disease process (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28274852\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">23,\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30716389\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps the main benefit of curcumin when it comes to heart disease is improving the function of the endothelium, the lining of your blood vessels (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5310664\/#:~:text=In%20healthy%20middle%2Daged%20and%20older%20adults%2C%2012%20weeks%20of,improving%20conduit%20artery%20endothelial%20function.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The endothelial dysfunction is a major driver of heart disease. This is when your endothelium is unable to regulate blood pressure, blood clotting, and various other factors (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28228072\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several studies suggest that curcumin can lead to improvements in\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2077-0383\/9\/3\/746\/htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">27<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindawi.com\/journals\/jnme\/2016\/1089653\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">28<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Additionally, one study found that it\u2019s as effective as exercise in post-menopausal women (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23146777\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, curcumin can help reduce inflammation and oxidation (as discussed above), which can play a role in heart disease. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one study of 121 people undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery, researchers assigned them either a placebo or 4 grams of curcumin per day a few days before and after the surgery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The curcumin group had a 65% decreased risk of experiencing a heart attack in the hospital (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22481014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> Turmeric May Help Prevent Cancer<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cancer is a disease, characterized by uncontrolled cell growth. There are many different forms of cancer that appear to be affected by curcumin supplements (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ar.iiarjournals.org\/content\/35\/2\/645\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">31<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curcumin has been studied as a beneficial herb in cancer treatment and been found to affect cancer growth and development (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6835707\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">32<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies have shown that it can (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S2212429218303948?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">33<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fphar.2020.01021\/full#B15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">34<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">):\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contribute to the death of cancerous cells<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduce angiogenesis (growth of new blood vessels in tumors)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduce metastasis (spread of cancer)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether high-dose curcumin \u2014 preferably with an absorption enhancer like piperine \u2014 can help treat cancer in humans has yet to be studied properly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there is evidence that it may\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevent cancer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0from occurring in the first place, especially cancers of the digestive system like colorectal cancer (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6835707\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">35<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a 30-day study in 44 men with lesions in the colon that sometimes turn cancerous, 4 grams of curcumin per day reduced the number of lesions by 40% (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21372035\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">36<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> Curcumin May be Useful in Treating Alzheimer\u2019s Disease<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alzheimer\u2019s disease is the most common form of dementia and may contribute to up 70% of dementia cases (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/dementia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">37<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While treatment exits for some of its symptoms, there is no cure for Alzheimer\u2019s yet. That\u2019s why preventing it from occurring in the first place is so important. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There may be good news on the horizon because curcumin has been shown to cross the blood-brain barrier (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5950688\/#:~:text=For%20prevention%20and%20treatment%20of,the%20risk%20of%20Alzheimer's%20disease.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">38<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s known that inflammation and oxidative damage play a role in Alzheimer\u2019s disease, and curcumin has beneficial effects on both (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5950688\/#:~:text=For%20prevention%20and%20treatment%20of,the%20risk%20of%20Alzheimer's%20disease.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">39<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, a key feature of Alzheimer\u2019s disease is a buildup of protein tangles called amyloid plaques. Studies show that curcumin can help clear these plaques (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16988474\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether curcumin can slow or even reverse the progression of Alzheimer\u2019s disease in people is currently unknown and needs to be studied.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> Arthritis Patients Respond Well yo Curcumin Supplements<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arthritis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a common problem in Western countries. There are several different types of arthritis, most of which involve inflammation in the joints.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given that curcumin is a potent anti-inflammatory compound, it makes sense that it may help with arthritis. In fact, several studies show that there is an association.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a study in people with rheumatoid arthritis, curcumin was even more effective than an anti-inflammatory drug (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22407780\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">41<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">May other studies have looked at the effects of curcumin on arthritis and noted improvements in various symptoms (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20657536\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">42<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> Curcumin has Benefits Against Depression<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curcumin has shown some promise in treating depression. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a controlled trial, 60 people with depression were randomized into three groups (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23832433\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">43<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).
