It\u2019s commonly dried, ground into a coarse, yellow powder, and used for either culinary or medicinal purposes (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5506628\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31629871\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21130854\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3<\/a>).\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s native to Afghanistan and Iran, asafoetida is commonly used in Indian cuisine, where it\u2019s referred to as hing (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5506628\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a seasoning, asafoetida is known for its strong, pungent odor, which is due to its high concentration of sulfur compounds. In fact, due to its unpleasant smell, it\u2019s sometimes referred to as stinking gum (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3459456\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, when cooked, its flavor and smell become much more palatable and are often described as being similar to those of leeks, garlic, and even meat (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5506628\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3459456\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Ayurvedic medicine, hing is used to aid digestion and gas, as well as treat bronchitis and kidney stones. During the Middle Ages, some people wore the dried gum around their necks to help ward off infection and disease (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3459456\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, many traditional uses of asafoetida haven\u2019t been proven by modern science. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This article examines the benefits, downsides, and uses of asafoetida.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Potential Benefits of Asafoetida<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While research is limited, asafoetida may offer a few health benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Good Source of Antioxidants<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asafoetida has been found to be a good source of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antioxidants<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5506628\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26427790\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pdfs.semanticscholar.org\/82bf\/907d6cb1b4e44385c089bf616e76d4734a80.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These compounds help protect your cells against potential damage caused by unstable molecules called free radicals. As a result, antioxidants may also help protect against chronic inflammation, heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26633317\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2835915\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specifically, asafoetida has been shown to contain high amounts of phenolic compounds, such as tannins and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flavonoids<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are known for their potent antioxidant effects (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pdfs.semanticscholar.org\/82bf\/907d6cb1b4e44385c089bf616e76d4734a80.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20966876\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While test-tube and animal studies have found asafoetida to exhibit anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity, more research needs to be done on its potential antioxidant effects in humans (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26427790\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/11292069\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, as asafoetida is used in such small amounts in cooking, it\u2019s unclear whether culinary use of the spice provides these benefits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>May be Good for Digestion<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most common uses of asafoetida is as an\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">indigestion<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0aid (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5506628\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one 30-day study including 43 adults with moderate to severe indigestion, those taking 250-mg capsules containing asafoetida twice a day reported significant improvements in bloating, digestion, and overall quality of life, compared with a placebo group (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6129344\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This study was funded by the company that produced the supplement, so that may have influenced the results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asafoetida has also been shown to help boost digestion by increasing the activity of digestive enzymes. Specifically, it may increase the release of bile from your liver, which is needed for digesting fat (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5506628\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/14727769\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the spice is also frequently used to prevent or reduce gas after eating, no research currently supports this effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>May Help Reduce Symptoms of IBS<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is a chronic digestive condition that\u2019s characterized by abdominal pain or discomfort, bloating, and gas, as well as constipation, diarrhea, or both (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5453305\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to its potential effects on digestion, asafoetida is thought to help reduce symptoms associated with IBS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two small studies in adults with IBS found a significant improvement in reported IBS symptoms after 2 weeks of taking asafoetida supplements. Yet, another study found that this supplement had no effect on IBS symptoms (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24222383\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, the available research is quite limited. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, one less direct way that asafoetida may benefit people with IBS is as a substitute for onion and garlic in cooking, as it offers a similar flavor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Onion and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">garlic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0contain high amounts of fructans, which are indigestible, fermentable carbs that may cause digestive distress in some individuals with IBS (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18456565\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5794652\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3934501\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Other Possible Benefits<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While studies on asafoetida are limited, early research suggests that it may have additional benefits, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial effects.\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Test-tube studies have found that asafoetida may protect against pathogens, such as various strains of\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Streptococcus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bacteria (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5506628\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6874844\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23320824\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">19<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>May help lower blood pressure.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Asafoetida may help lower blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels.
