{"id":5615,"date":"2024-05-15T14:19:50","date_gmt":"2024-05-15T11:19:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.webcozumleri.com\/?p=5615"},"modified":"2025-03-27T18:13:21","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T15:13:21","slug":"grape-seed-extract","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.webcozumleri.com\/en\/grape-seed-extract\/","title":{"rendered":"Grape Seed Extract"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><em><strong>Grape seed extract (GSE) is a dietary supplement made by removing, drying, and pulverizing the bitter-tasting seeds of grapes.<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grape seeds are rich in antioxidants, including phenolic acids, anthocyanins, flavonoids, and oligomeric proanthocyanidin complexes (OPCs). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, GSE is one of the best-known sources of proanthocyanidins (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28914789\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24007424\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to its high antioxidant content, GSE can help prevent disease and protect against oxidative stress, tissue damage, and inflammation (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28208630\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note that grape seed extract and grapefruit seed extract are both marketed as supplements and abbreviated by the acronym GSE. This article discusses grape seed extract. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are 10 health benefits of grape seed extract, all based on science.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> Can Reduce Blood Pressure<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several studies have researched the effects of GSE on high blood pressure.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A review of 16 studies in 810 people with high blood pressure or an elevated risk of it found that taking 100\u20132,000 mg of GSE daily significantly reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure (the top and bottom number) by an average of 6.08 mmHg and 2.8 mmHg, respectively.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those under the age of 50 with obesity or a metabolic disorder showed the greatest improvements. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most promising results came from lower doses of 100\u2013800 mg daily for 8\u201316 weeks, rather than a single dose of 800 mg or more (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5370781\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study in 29 adults with high blood pressure found that taking 300 mg of GSE daily lowered systolic blood pressure by 5.6% and diastolic blood pressure by 4.7% after 6 weeks (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26568249\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> Can Improve Blood Flow<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some studies suggest that GSE may\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improve blood flow<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an 8-week study in 17 healthy postmenopausal women, taking 400 mg of GSE had blood-thinning effects, potentially reducing the risk of blood clots (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17950783\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An additional study in 8 healthy young women assessed the effects of a single 400-mg dose of proanthocyanidin from GSE immediately followed by 6 hours of sitting. It was shown to reduce leg swelling and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">edema<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0by 70%, compared with not taking GSE.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the same study, 8 other healthy young women who took a daily 133-mg dose of proanthocyanidins from GSE for 14 days experienced 40% less leg swelling after 6 hours of sitting (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22752876\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> Could Reduce Oxidative Damage<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An elevated blood level of LDL (bad) cholesterol is a known risk factor for\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart disease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The oxidation of LDL cholesterol significantly increases this risk and plays a central role in atherosclerosis, or the buildup of fatty plaque in your arteries (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4258672\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GSE supplements have been found to reduce LDL oxidation triggered by high fat diets in several animal studies (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27847215\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28903761\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24705696\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some research in humans shows similar results (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17616006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/14564675\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When 8 healthy people ate a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/10-super-healthy-high-fat-foods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high fat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0meal, taking 300 mg of GSE inhibited the oxidation of fats in the blood, compared with a 150% increase seen in those who did not take GSE (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12475295\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In another study, 61 healthy adults saw a 13.9% reduction in oxidized LDL after taking 400 mg of GSE. However, a similar study was unable to replicate these results (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26568249\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17616006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, a study in 87 people undergoing heart surgery found that taking 400 mg of GSE the day before surgery significantly reduced oxidative stress. Therefore, GSE likely protected against further heart damage (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28074795\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> May Improve Collagen Levels and Bone Strength<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasing flavonoid consumption may improve\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">collagen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> synthesis and bone formation.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a rich source of flavonoids, GSE may thus help increase your bone density and strength. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, animal studies have found that adding GSE to either a low calcium, standard, or high calcium diet can increase bone density, mineral content, and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bone strength<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15693829\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15951633\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition that results in severe inflammation and the destruction of bone and joints.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animal studies have shown that GSE may suppress bone destruction in inflammatory autoimmune\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arthritis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23251512\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23759204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">19<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19446580\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GSE also significantly reduced pain, bony spurs, and joint damage in osteoarthritic mice, improving collagen levels and reducing cartilage loss (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19446580\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite promising results from animal research, human studies are lacking.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> Supports Your Brain as it Ages<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flavonoids\u2019 combination of antioxidant and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-inflammatory<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0properties are thought to delay or reduce the onset of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer\u2019s disease (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4288281\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the components of GSE is gallic acid, which animal and lab studies have shown can inhibit the formation of fibrils by beta-amyloid peptides (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24157371\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">23<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clusters of beta-amyloid proteins in the brain are characteristic of Alzheimer\u2019s disease (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24157371\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">23<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animal studies have found that GSE may prevent memory loss, improve cognitive status and brain antioxidant levels, and reduce brain lesions and amyloid clusters (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24171080\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21871550\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18815129\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18562609\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">27<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One 12-week study in 111 healthy older adults found that taking 150 mg of GSE daily improved attention, language, and both immediate and delayed memory (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29163162\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">28<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, human studies on the use of GSE in adults with preexisting memory or cognitive deficits are lacking.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> Can Improve Kidney Function<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your kidneys are particularly susceptible to oxidative damage, which is often irreversible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animal studies have shown that GSE may reduce\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kidney damage<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and improve function by reducing oxidative stress and inflammatory damage (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23314139\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22257215\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22677922\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">31<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one study, 23 people diagnosed with chronic renal failure were given 2 grams of GSE daily for 6 months and then compared with a placebo group. Urinary protein decreased by 3% and kidney filtration improved by 9%. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that the kidneys of those in the test group were much better able to filter urine than the kidneys of those in the placebo group (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27822171\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">32<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> Can Inhibit Infectious Growth<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GSE displays promising antibacterial and antifungal properties. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies have shown that GSE inhibits the growth of common foodborne bacteria, including\u00a0Campylobacter\u00a0and\u00a0E. coli, both of which are often responsible for severe\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">food poisoning<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and abdominal upset (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0956713512002976\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">33<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0956713514006586\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">34<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In lab studies, GSE has been found to inhibit 43 strains of antibiotic-resistant\u00a0Staphylococcus aureus\u00a0bacteria <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20519844\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(35<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Candida is a common yeast-like fungus that can sometimes result in\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/candida-symptoms-treatment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">candida overgrowth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or thrush. GSE is widely used in traditional medicine as a remedy for candida. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one study, mice with vaginal candidiasis were given an intravaginal GSE solution every 2 days for 8 days.
