Plus, it\u2019s now popular throughout South America as a fodder crop to improve soil quality (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-020-64989-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1<\/a>).<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The flowering portion of red clover is used decoratively as an edible garnish or extract, and it can be extracted into\u00a0essential oils\u00a0(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6271154\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, it\u2019s widely used as a traditional medicine to treat osteoporosis, heart disease, arthritis, skin disorders, cancer, respiratory problems like asthma, and women\u2019s health issues, such as menstrual and menopausal symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Potential Benefits<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite limited scientific evidence, red clover is used to treat a variety of conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Bone Health<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Osteoporosis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a condition in which your bones exhibit low bone mineral density (BMD) and have become weak (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK441901\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a woman reaches menopause, a decline in reproductive hormones \u2014 namely estrogen \u2014 can lead to increased bone turnover and a decrease in BMD (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5643776\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4,\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4187361\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red clover contains isoflavones, which are a type of phytoestrogen \u2014 a plant compound that can weakly mimic estrogen in the body. Some research has shown a connection between isoflavone intake and a decrease in osteoporosis risk (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32524173\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6,\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4717511\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21958941\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a08<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2015 study in 60 premenopausal women found that taking 5 ounces (150 mL) of red clover extract containing 37 mg of isoflavones daily for 12 weeks led to less BMD loss in the lumbar spine and neck, compared with the placebo group (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4523657\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Older studies have also shown improvements in BMD after taking red clover extract (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/14749241\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10,\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/11449083\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, a 2015 study in 147 postmenopausal women found that taking 50 mg of red clover daily for 1 year resulted in no improvements in BMD, compared with the placebo group (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25369831\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, other studies have failed to find that red clover can help treat BMD (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2758721\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13,\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26471215\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Menopausal Symptoms<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red clover\u2019s high isoflavone content is believed to help lower menopause symptoms, such as hot flashes and night sweats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two review studies found that 40\u201380 mg of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">red clover<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Promensil) per day may help alleviate hot flashes in women with severe symptoms (5 or more per day) by 30\u201350%. Still, many studies were funded by supplement companies, which may lead to bias (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26471215\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14,\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28160855\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study observed a 73% decrease in\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hot flashes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within 3 months after taking a supplement containing numerous herbs, including red clover. Yet, due to the large number of ingredients, it\u2019s unknown whether red clover played a role in these improvements (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17454163\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red clover has also shown mild improvements in other menopausal symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, and vaginal dryness (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26471215\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19948385\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17,\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3590693\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, numerous studies have shown no improvements in menopausal symptoms after taking red clover, compared with a placebo (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21152828\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">19,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19609225\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20,\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31975316\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21,\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17239573\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22,\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16645539\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">23<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, there\u2019s no clear evidence that supplementing with red clover will improve menopause symptoms. Higher quality, third-party research is needed (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24323914\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Skin And Hair Health<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red clover extract has been used in traditional medicine to promote skin and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hair health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a randomized study in 109 postmenopausal women, participants reported significant improvements in hair and skin texture, appearance, and overall quality after taking 80 mg of red clover extract for 90 days (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3206499\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study in 30 men showed a 13% increase in the hair growth cycle (anagen) and a 29% decrease in the hair loss cycle (telogen) when a 5% red clover extract was applied to the scalp for 4 months, compared with the placebo group (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23449130\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Heart Health<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some preliminary research has shown red clover may improve\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in postmenopausal women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One 2015 study in 147 postmenopausal women indicated a 12% decrease in LDL (bad) cholesterol after taking 50 mg of red clover (Rimostil) daily for 1 year (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25369831\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">27<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One review of studies in postmenopausal women taking red clover for 4\u201312 months showed a significant increase in HDL (good) cholesterol and a decrease in total and LDL (bad) cholesterol (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30269660\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">28<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, a 2020 review found red clover did not reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol or increase HDL (good) cholesterol (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31883666\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite some promising results, the authors argued that many studies were small in sample size and lacked proper blinding. Therefore, higher quality research is needed (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31883666\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Red clover is a dark-pink herbaceous plant originating from Europe, Asia, and North Africa.
