Additionally, participants felt they could reduce their dose of anti-inflammatory pain relievers because of this capsule (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20015358\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, research is insufficient to recommend stinging nettle as an anti-inflammatory treatment. More human studies are needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> May Treat Enlarged Prostate Symptoms<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up to 50% of men aged 51 and older have an enlarged prostate gland (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27582614\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An enlarged prostate is commonly called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Scientists aren\u2019t sure what causes BPH, but it can lead to significant discomfort during urination. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, a few studies suggest that stinging nettle may help treat BPH. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animal research reveals that this powerful plant may prevent the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone \u2014 a more powerful form of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">testosterone\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21806658\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stopping this conversion can help reduce prostate size (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16985920\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies in people with BPH demonstrate that stinging nettle extracts help treat short- and long-term urination problems \u2014 without side effects (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16635963\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18038253\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it\u2019s unclear how effective stinging nettle is compared to conventional treatments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> May Treat Hay Fever<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hay fever is an allergy that involves inflammation in the lining of your nose.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stinging nettle is viewed as a promising natural treatment for hay fever.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Test-tube research shows that stinging nettle extracts can inhibit inflammation that can trigger seasonal allergies (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19140159\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This includes blocking histamine receptors and stopping immune cells from releasing chemicals that trigger allergy symptoms (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19140159\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, human studies note that stinging nettle is equal to or only slightly better at treating hay fever than a placebo (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/2192379\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29844782\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this plant may prove a promising natural remedy for hay fever symptoms, more long-term human studies are needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> May Lower Blood Pressure<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly half of adults in the United States have high blood pressure (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/bloodpressure\/facts.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">19<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood pressure is a serious health concern because it puts you at risk of heart disease and strokes, which are among the leading causes of death worldwide (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/heartdisease\/facts.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stinging nettle was traditionally used to treat high blood pressure (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27585814\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animal and test-tube studies illustrate that it may help lower blood pressure in several ways.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For one, it may <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stimulate\u00a0nitric oxide\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">production, which acts as a vasodilator. Vasodilators relax the muscles of your blood vessels, helping them widen (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27585814\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17170603\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, stinging nettle has compounds that may act as calcium channel blockers, which\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relax your heart\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by reducing the force of contractions (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27585814\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21896151\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">23<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In animal studies, stinging nettle has been shown to lower blood pressure levels while raising the heart\u2019s antioxidant defenses (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12020933\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30097121\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, stinging nettle\u2019s effects on blood pressure in humans are still unclear. Additional human studies are needed before recommendations can be made.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> May Aid Blood Sugar Control<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both human and animal studies link stinging nettle to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower blood sugar levels\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29749986\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26916435\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">27<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23115450\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">28<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18955212\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24273930\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, this plant contains compounds that may mimic the effects of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insulin\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20013820\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">31<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a three-month study in 46 people, taking 500 mg of stinging nettle extract three times daily significantly lowered blood sugar levels compared to a placebo (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24273930\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite promising findings, there are still far too few human studies on stinging nettle and blood sugar control. More research is necessary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Other Potential Benefits<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stinging nettle may offer other potential health benefits, including:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Reduced bleeding:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Medicines containing stinging nettle extract have been found to reduce excessive bleeding, especially after surgery (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23724529\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">32<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20098971\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">33<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Liver health:\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nettle\u2019s antioxidant properties may protect your\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liver\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">against damage by toxins, heavy metals and inflammation (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27047060\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">34<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22585933\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">35<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Natural diuretic:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0This plant may help your body <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shed\u00a0excess salt\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and water, which in turn could lower blood pressure temporarily.
