The top food sources <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include\u00a0red wine, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grapes, some berries and peanuts (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4499410\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27422505\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This compound tends to be concentrated mostly in the skins and seeds of grapes and berries. These parts of the grape are included in the fermentation of red wine, hence its particularly high concentration of resveratrol (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4499410\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/9292395\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, much of the research on resveratrol has been done in animals and test tubes using high amounts of the compound (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4499410\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3116821\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of the limited research in humans, most has focused on supplemental forms of the compound, in concentrations higher than those you could get through food (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4499410\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> Resveratrol Supplements May Help Lower Blood Pressure<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of its antioxidant properties, resveratrol could be a promising supplement for\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lowering blood pressure\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27144581\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2015 review concluded that high doses may help reduce the pressure exerted on artery walls when the heart beats (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24731650\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That type of pressure is called systolic blood pressure, and appears as the upper number in blood pressure readings.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Systolic blood pressure typically goes up with age, as arteries stiffen. When high, it\u2019s a risk factor for heart disease. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resveratrol may accomplish this blood-pressure-lowering effect by helping to produce more nitric oxide, which causes blood vessels to relax (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25302702\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18259008\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the authors of that study say more research is needed before specific recommendations can be made about the best dose of resveratrol to maximize blood pressure benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> It Has a Positive Effect on Blood Fats<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several studies in animals have suggested that resveratrol supplements may change blood fats in a healthy way (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3957267\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27085216\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2016 study fed mice a high-protein, high-polyunsaturated fat diet and also gave them resveratrol supplements. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers found the average total cholesterol levels and body weight of the mice decreased, and their levels of \u201cgood\u201d HDL cholesterol increased (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27085216\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resveratrol seems to influence cholesterol levels by reducing the effect of an enzyme that controls cholesterol production (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27085216\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an antioxidant, it also may decrease the oxidation of \u201cbad\u201d LDL cholesterol. LDL oxidation contributes to plaque buildup in artery walls (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27144581\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/1752940\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one study, participants were given grape extract that had been boosted with extra resveratrol.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After six months of treatment, their LDL had gone down by 4.5% and their oxidized LDL had gone down by 20% compared to participants who took an unenriched grape extract or a placebo (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22648627\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> It Lengthens Lifespan in Certain Animals<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The compound\u2019s ability to extend lifespan in different organisms has become a major area of research (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12939617\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s evidence that resveratrol activates certain genes that ward off the diseases of aging (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3799917\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It works to achieve this in the same way as calorie restriction, which has shown promise in lengthening lifespans by changing how genes express themselves (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15254550\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23624181\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">19<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, it\u2019s not clear if the compound would have a similar effect in humans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A review of studies exploring this connection found that resveratrol increased lifespan in 60% of the organisms studied, but the effect was strongest in organisms that were less related to humans, such as worms and fish (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27781945\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> It Protects The Brain<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several studies have suggested that drinking red wine can help slow down age-related cognitive decline (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4030174\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17077308\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22396249\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">23<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23458470\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This may partly be due to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of resveratrol.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It seems to interfere with protein fragments called beta-amyloids, which are crucial to forming the plaques that are a hallmark of Alzheimer\u2019s disease (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4030174\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25851110\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, the compound may set off a chain of events that protects brain cells from damage (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4030174\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this research is intriguing, scientists still have questions about how well the human body is able to make use of supplemental resveratrol, which limits its immediate use as a supplement to protect the brain (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26845555\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28086917\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b> It May Increase Insulin Sensitivity<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resveratrol has been shown to have several benefits for diabetes, at least in animal studies. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These benefits include increasing\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insulin\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sensitivity and preventing complications from diabetes (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4160010\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16286809\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">27<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21699681\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One explanation for how resveratrol works is that it may stop a certain enzyme from turning glucose into sorbitol, a sugar alcohol. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When too much sorbitol builds up in people with diabetes, it can create cell-damaging oxidative stress (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11983346\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">):\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>May protect against oxidative stress:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Its antioxidant action may help protect against oxidative stress, which causes some of the complications of diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Helps decrease inflammation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Resveratrol is thought to lessen inflammation, a key contributor to chronic diseases, including diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Activates AMPK:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0This is a protein that helps the body metabolize glucose.
